Hawthorne Speckle is BACK!

Remember during our Big Sale last November we introduced a new Hawthorne yarn? Well, it proved so popular we had to bring it back – say hello again to Hawthorne Speckle!

Hawthorne-Speckle

I have to admit, I was not fully on the speckle train, unlike all of my fellow coworkers. However, I did think the colorway Aquatic Speckle was pretty (I’m a sucker for blues & greens). So when we got it back in, I decided it was time to start a new pair of socks…and now I’m in love.  I really enjoy the random pops of color throughout my project – I don’t mind the pooling nature of handdyed yarns such as the regular Hawthorne line but if you do, Speckle is certainly the way to go.

26872

While I’m just doing a pair of plain socks, using my Go Your Own Way pattern, there are so many other patterns that Hawthorne Speckle will look great in! Here are a few on my to-knit list.

First of all, I’m constantly making slouchy hats and ones in fingering weight are always my favorites – I probably don’t need to say that I have several Hawthorne hats already. So next up for me is the the fun Portland Saturday Market by designer 80skeins.

13460220crop

I love the purl ridges mixed with the stockinette – it keeps my attention and it’s fun to watch the hat grow. I think this would look fantastic in Graffiti Speckle colorway – and a fun hat to wear when I’m actually at the Saturday Market.

Another type of fingering weight projects I love are shawlettes/scarves – just the right amount of warmth on a spring day or summer evening. One I’ve been dying to do is the Shea Scarf by Tabetha A. Hedrick – I just love this stitch pattern.

12791220crop

I think this would look fabulous in a colorway like Confetti Speckle – bright pops of a rainbow colors to greet the sunny days we know are on the way!

Since many folks tend to shy away from garments in handdyed yarns – because of the pooling nature – I bet Hawthorne Speckle would be a great substitute. A lightweight top would make a wonderful eye-catching project. So the Distant Lights Top by Irina Anikeeva is top of my list.

13290220crop

I’m thinking Cosmic Speckle would be a great choice for this project!

So are you a Speckle-lover? What projects do you like for this fun yarn?

pantone

Hear that? That’s the sound of beautiful blush pinks and pale blues calling to you for your next project! The 2016 Pantone colors are simply lovely and we have all the yarn you need to satisfy your color craving.

Step 1: Take a moment to browse our yarns to find your favorite Pantone pinks and blues! Billow in Tea Rose and Palette in Blush are some of my favorite pale pinks while to Aloft in Sky and Wool of the Andes Clarity are the perfect pale blues but almost every yarn line has a color (or five!) that fit right in to this palette.

Step 2: Pick a pattern! We have patterns already in the perfect color palette to celebrate these great colors:

Zig Zag Dishcloth by Faith Schmidt

Strand Hill Lace Cardigan by Keya Kuhn

The Circus Hat by Trelly Hernandez

Huckle Wrap by Megan Goodacre

Ayre Hat by Emily Guise

Glacial Spa Cloth by Beth Major

Do these super soft spring colors have you reaching for your needles or hooks? I have a few baby knits coming up in my queue (tis the season, it seems!) and I can’t wait to dig in to my cottons and washable blends in these colors for all the new babes due soon. Tell me what you have planned in the comments!

Introducing: Paragon Yarn

New yarn launch days are my favorite: it’s when we get to finally share all of the wonderfully new yarn love that we’ve been secretly swooning over for the past few months. And this yarn is no exception, Paragon is a sport weight yarn and it’s the holy trinity of yarn for me – it has a little bit of everything that I love in a yarn.

First – it’s got 50% Mmmmerino, which adds that distinctive bounce and squish that I can’t get enough of in a yarn. Secondly – there’s 25% Baby Alpaca, which adds a softness and an extra dose of warmth. And the last 25% of Paragon is made up of luxurious silk, which is what adds that incredible sheen.

knit picks paragon yarn merino baby alpaca silkParagon Sport Weight Yarn

Several of us have already started (and finished!) projects in Paragon – all of which look and feel amazing. Alison knit up an adorable sweater for her son and Hannah is working her way through the Fall Day Vest from our Twist and Tweed pattern collection. I just adore how Paragon looks in cabled patterns, the silk reflects the light beautifully to highlight the textured stitches. Plus the twist of Paragon gives lace, cables and textures a crisp finish.

And here are a few quick stats on Paragon: it has 123 yards/50g ball and is a sport weight yarn with 16 stellar shades to choose from.

Looking to dye your own luscious merino, baby alpaca and silk blend? Paragon is available as an undyed natural yarn and that comes as a 100g hank with 246 yards, find it here.

We can’t wait to see what kind of projects that you knit or crochet up in Paragon! We’d love to hear your plans in the comments below!

Monthly Yarn Sale: Great Patterns in Swish

WN16_Swish_Glamour

Swish is the superwash of knitters’ dreams!  Just the ticket for children’s clothes, afghans, charity knitting and gift knitting, there’s no need to worry about the care your knitting will receive since this yarn can be machine washed and will come out even softer than before. Swish also happens to be on sale this month as part of our Monthly Yarn Sale. Save 20% this month on all in stock Swish colors and weights!

This super versatile yarn is great in cables, colorwork and even heavier-weight lace projects. Take a peek at some of our bestselling patterns below for some extra inspiration and maybe, just maybe you’ll find yourself with a few balls of this magical yarn in your cart!

Swish performs wonderfully in cable projects! Not only is this yarn super soft and has a nice drape, it also has excellent stitch definition, perfect for textured stitches or complicated cables. Rhiannon is a great example of an heirloom-quality cabled pullover. This pattern is knit up in Swish DK in colorway Lost Lake Heather, but would look equally lovely in any of the heathered colorways.

Likewise, Swish DK really shines in the Rooted Cable Hat. I love a good, fitted beanie and this pattern is no exception. While this pattern is also knit up in a heather (Squirrel, my favorite!) it would look fantastic in a bright solid like Twilight or even Honey!

Dip into lace and eyelets with Andi Satterland’s Sunshower Cardigan! Worked in Swish Worsted Honey, this sweater promises to be a quick knit as well as an instant wardrobe staple. I love when a worsted weight yarn can be used in such a feminine piece without looking too heavy.

Swish looks great in colorwork projects like the Le Chapeau hat too. I have a soft spot for novelty knits and these little french fellows are simply irresistible! Plus, that pompom. So cute!

While not quite colorwork, the mosaic technique is absolutely stunning in this Blanket for Ivy pattern. I have a queue of friends having babies in the next few months, so I’ve been trolling through my list of baby patterns for inspiration. This is a stunning blanket, perfect for celebrating a new baby. It’s the perfect size to double as a play blanket once they get a little older, too! Swish is superwash, so no need to worry that the recipient will undo all those hours of hard work. This blanket can easily be tossed into the wash, and will come out softer and lovelier than before.

What patterns and projects have you made in Swish? Tell us in comments, below!

BigCozy_Glamour

Aptly named, The Big Cozy is the perfect yarn for super-soft, fabulously quick projects! We’re featuring The Big Cozy at 20% off for our monthly yarn sale in June, making this the perfect time to grab a ball or two for your next project. Need some inspiration? Read on for some lovely patterns in this must-have yarn!

First up, Emily’s Carr Cushion from Big Art Knits Collection features some incredible, show-stopping bobbles. The ultimate textured pillow, you can make this fit into any home by changing the color to suit your decor.

For a cute twist, try your hand at a Mini Kitty Pouf pillow from our Petite Presents collection! Knit Picks own Stacey has made two of these cuties for herself since this pattern came out and I love how different each one looks depending on the color choices. This pattern definitely counts as a quick weekend project that is easily tackled by a beginner knitter. Have a real kitty at home? Go ahead and match your yarn to your furry friend to make a little couch buddy just like it!

The Big Cozy also makes great accessories, perfect for gift-giving or portable knitting! The Mossbank Headband uses just a single ball and is a great project for stash-busting or “yarn tasting”, when you slip a single ball into your next order.

Lastly, the V-stitch Bulky Cowl is a free crochet pattern and another excellent accessory. Whether you’re gifting it to your favorite craft recipient or treating yourself to a new wardrobe staple you can whip one up in a single afternoon!

Big yarns are so much fun to work with and are great “palate cleansers” between fiddly, light-weight projects. The Big Cozy is such a wonderfully soft combination of superfine alpaca and highland wool.  Make sure you snap up a ball (or two!) on your next order!

Luminous Luminance Silk Yarn!

Boy, do we have a treat for you! Check out breathtaking our new silk laceweight yarn Luminance.

Luminance Silk Laceweight Yarn from knitpicks.com

This absolutely stunning yarn is our most luxurious yarn to date – it’s 100% silk – and the colors are just so deep and gorgeous. I have a box of it near my desk and I just want to pet it all the time! I don’t often knit with laceweight yarn but I think I’ll be making an exception for Luminance. It also has an excellent price – $10.99 for 439 yards – most other silk or silk blend laceweight yarns are at least twice that!

Luminance Silk Laceweight Yarn from knitpicks.com

Check out those gorgeous blues!

Luminance is wonderful for shawls, scarves, cowls and even lightweight tops – you’ll want to keep this close to your skin. In fact, we have a beautiful stole in our gorgeous Joyful Lace collection that shows off the beauty of Luminance – Austen by Kirsten Singer.

Austen Lace Stole by Kirsten Singer from knitpicks.com

When we got the sample in the office, all of us here were just ooing and awing over how wonderfully this yarn knits up, not to mention how well it worked with Kirsten’s intricate lace pattern. I think all of us were ready to cast on a new project right then and there!

If you want a bit of a smaller but no less gorgeous project, check out Joyce Fassbender‘s new (and free!) pattern, Papillion Choker and Wristlets.

Papillion Choker and Wristlets by Joyce Fassbender from knitpicks.com

Also knit up in Luminance, this pretty pattern features lace butterfly motifs and sweet beads to give your outfit a romantic flair. The drape & softness of Luminance is perfect for small accessories like these – and you’ll feel like an elegant star anytime you wear them!

While these patterns are so pretty, I’m such a newbie when it comes to lace knitting so I’ll want to try something a bit less intricate for my first time using this yarn. One pattern I’ve been a fan of for several years is the lovely Camber Cowl by Veronica Webb.

Camber Cowl Pattern by Veronica Webb

It’s a much easier pattern for a beginner! Since it was originally done in a silk blend yarn, Luminance is an excellent substitution. I can’t wait to cast on!

We’re so excited for everyone to get their hands on this yarn & fall in love with it just like we did. Check out all 15 vivid colors of Luminance – or if you prefer dying your own, we also sell it in 100 gram undyed hanks too. Once you touch this yarn, there’s no going back – let us know what you think!

Felici is BACK!

Great news! Felici, our beloved stripey sock yarn, is back with new colors!

Stripey Sock Yarn Felici from knitpicks.com

Clockwise, L-R: Dark Side, Balloon Ride, Sprinkles, Bubble, Kaleidoscope, Ever After, Eclipse, Beyond the Wall, Lost Lakes, Sunset.

Aren’t they gorgeous? These are are our 10 new colors, plus we brought back our classic Rainbow and Time Traveler. Since Felici is limited time yarn, we get to have a lot of fun with coming up with new colorways for you to have fun with – of course if the colors are a big hit (such as Rainbow & Time Traveler), we bring them back, but mainly we just like to create new special colors for you to enjoy!

I’m really excited about my favorite color – Beyond The Wall! I made the suggestion of the cool icy blues to greys as an homage to a favorite book series and TV show, Game of Thrones. I was so delighted to see it in person!

Stripey Sock Yarn Felici in Beyond The Wall from knitpicks.com

I’ll certainly be casting on for some socks with this while I’m watching the season finale this week!

Another really fun one is Kaleidoscope – we took our favorite colors from Stroll Brights and alternated them with a light grey. So you get the fun neons without going blind.

Stripey Sock Yarn Felici in Kaleidoscope from knitpicks.com

It just make me so happy to look at it! This would be a great color for baby sweater, like the Baby Surprise Jacket – such cute bright colors on a baby would make anyone smile.

Another I like very much is Lost Lakes:

Stripey Sock Yarn Felici Lost Lakes from knitpicks.com

All those wonderful blues, greens and teals mixed together remind me of being hiking through my favorite Oregon hiking trails! I’m dying to make a softy stripey hat to wear.

Those are my favorites – which colorway immediately catches your eye? Don’t miss out – since we do limited edition Felici colors, once these are gone, there’s no guarantee they’ll come back!

The Gramcrackers Mitts by Alyssa Copp in Wool of the Andes Tweed make the perfect accessory! Rustic tweedy nepps really shine in this simple pattern. Shown here in Rabbit Heather, I think they would look incredibly stunning in a dark color like Wellies Heather (on sale for $3.14/50g ball). I’ve knit three sweaters in this incredibly rugged-yet-soft yarn and have become a total super fan-girl for Wellies Heather.

So picture this: You have one skein of our new Mighty Stitch Super Bulky yarn, maybe because you just wanted to play with it. But what do you do with 44 yards of this lovely yarn? Well, we have the perfect quick knit for you – the Ski Bunny Headband, a new free pattern by Kimberly Golynskiy!

You’ll be thankful when the temperature drops, for this snuggly warm headband that’s knit in one piece, with no seaming! First you knit a 12″ icord, then increase, for the super simple body portion of the headband. Once that’s done, you’ll simply decrease down to make another icord for the other side. Easy peasy!

Then it’s my favorite part – pom-poms! I think every project should include cute fluffy pom-poms, plus it insures you won’t have leftovers just hanging around. The best pom-pom makers I’ve used are the Clover versions – they’re super easy to use and always create the perfect shape.

Once the pompoms are attached, you’re ready to hit the slopes…or simply keep your ears warm when the winter winds start to howl. This project is super quick as well – an hour or two from start to finish – which makes it a fantastic last minute gift for your cold weather-loving friends. While we love Mighty Stitch Super Bulky for this project, this also works well with our other super bulky yarns, The Big Cozy and Tuff Puff, if you want an even warmer headband! Since it only takes one skein of yarn, you’ll be able to make one in every color of the rainbow.

Here are some of our favorite staff projects in Preciosa Tonal Fingering Yarn, for some inspiration:

I made a Sweet William sweater for my daughter for next Easter. Bold and dramatic in the bright pokeberry colorway, this sweater will make her stand out among the Easter egg hunters!

mitts

I’m slowly working on mittens for a Mitten Garland Advent Calendar. I stuck to four colors of Preciosa Tonal Fingering (Bare, Bonsai, Gladiola, and Stormy) and I love how the color ties all the different patterns together, so nicely!

Jenny made a fingering weight sweater (pattern: Louise Light) for herself in bare, with touches of Anemone. By doing this, she avoided any pooling with the tonal nature of the yarn. Classy, don’t you think?

I also avoided pooling when I doubled Preciosa Tonal Fingering Yarn to make this Garland sweater. With so much yardage, a few skeins is all you need to complete a whole garment! This sweater is going to be perfect for Fall outings when we’re not quite ready for the winter coat.

If you love Preciosa Tonal Fingering Yarn as much as we do, now is your chance to get a free skein with a purchase of $75. Hurry, though, this deal is only through next Wednesday!

*Promo codes ends 08/31/16. Normal shipping charges apply. Purchase required, must meet or exceed $75USD ($75 AUD or £75) for free promotional yarn ($11.99 value).
